Homam: Bridging Humans with the Divine Energy

Homam is a sacred Vedic fire ritual (vaidika havana kriya) performed in accordance with the dharmic order prescribed in the Vedas. In this practice, the devotee invokes the deity with devotion and offers oblations into the sacred fire (Agni), which acts as the divine medium carrying the offerings to the gods. It is a spiritual discipline aimed at seeking blessings, purification, prosperity, and divine grace.

How is Homam performed?

  • Agni Sthapanam (Fire Installation): The sacred fire is lit in the homa kundam by chanting specific mantras.

  • Offering of Havissu (Oblations): Ghee, rice, and fragrant substances are offered into the fire.

  • Mantra Recitation: Mantras dedicated to the deity are chanted with purity and devotion.

  • Poornahuti (Final Offering): At the concluding stage of the ritual, the main and complete offering is made into the fire.

What is the origin of the word Homam?

The word “Homam” is derived from the Sanskrit roots “Hu” and “Ma”. Homam is considered a Pancha-bhoutika Yajna—a divine ritual performed to purify the five elements (Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Space) and to unite the individual, the surroundings, and divine grace in harmony.
